I worked in the Southbank ITV tower for a year when I first moved to London and although I completely fell in love with The Archduke (which remains one of my absolute favourite spots down purely to their epic mini sausages) it was often a struggle to find a great place for after work drinks around Waterloo.
Enter Tonight Josephine!
Named in honour of Napoleon’s wife (because it’s next to Waterloo…obv) Josephine’s bar combines all the things I love – neon pink, great music and even greater cocktails. Having heard good things on the grapevine since the bar opened in June (and of course spotting all of those Insta pics) I grabbed two of my favourite ex-work wives and headed over last night.
The location is super convenient and the bright pink exterior makes sure that the bar stands out amongst the grey of Waterloo Road. The sign on the street is also a giveaway and I knew this place was on my wavelength…
A question I ask myself often! The stairs down to the bar itself are lit up with neon signs – a definite opportunity for that perfect selfie!
We managed to snag a table and I’d definitely recommend booking in advance to make sure you find somewhere to perch and enjoy the cocktails and tunes. The menu is extensive and if you’re anything like me you’ll definitely have a hard time deciding. Prices are reasonable for a central London bar and Happy Hour is 5-7 every day too! It just gets better.
My first choice was XOXO – Josephine’s version of an Espresso Martini which was absolutely gorgeous and definitely needed after a long day in the office. One of the girls joined me and the other ordered a Bombay Collins, a gin and lemon juice number which also came highly recommended.
XOXO and Bombay Collins
The first round was such a success that the girls went for the same again in round two while I moved on to the romantically named Midnight Flower – a yummy blend of pineapples and gin, which went down a little too easily!
The music was banging by this point and the tunes were right up my street – mainly old school R’n’B (think No Scrubs) with a bit of One Direction thrown in for good measure. A cool atmosphere with a bunch of nice people.
We left after round two for a dinner reservation but I have no doubt I’ll be back amongst the neon and mirrors extremely soon to work through the menu!
Perfect for: drinks after a long day in the office or when you’re looking for a fun weekend party vibe.
You can check Josephine’s style out for yourself (and I’d definitely recommend it) at 111 Waterloo Road, London, SE1 8UL.
